The Unofficial TOC: August/September 2012

Pups, principles, and paper: Those are themes in this issue’s Unofficial Table of Contents. Here’s what we mean:

Visiting artists often means visiting their dogs. In August/September we meet Katherine Glover’s Chui and Natalie Chanin’s big poodle puppy. (And if you look closely, you’ll see a charming toy-encrusted hound made by sculptor Robert Bradford and featured in Raw + Material = Art.)

Yes, Margaret De Patta may have pioneered the idea that the value of jewelry is in its artistry, not the market price of the raw materials. But that’s a principle Ruta Reifen holds dear, as her cement and brass jewelry illustrates.

Do you dream of building your ideal studio from scratch? Well, two guys in this issue did that: furniture maker Robert Erickson and metalsmith David Huang.

Erickson, along with Katherine Glover, is distinctive for another reason. Both were shaped by intentional communities – Glover in her childhood enclave outside Boston and Erickson in 1960s countercultural commune Druid Heights near San Francisco.

And in case you’re counting, Florence appears three times in the issue:
• The 1966 flood in the Italian city, and the Renaissance-era books it ruined, inspired Glover to create her fabulous works in paper.
• In the editor’s note, we’re reminded of JFK’s wisdom on the longevity of art; “Dante outlived the ambitions of 13th-century Florence,” he said.
Natalie Chanin hails from Florence, Alabama – a world away from Italy but with its share of stylish denizens nonetheless.

What struck you in the magazine? And have you joined the American Craft Council, so you can get the magazine at home (and go free to our shows)? Our mission is to remind people how important the creative impulse is to their quality of life. We support artists, and we hope you’ll join us.
