The Unofficial TOC: June/July 2012

Last issue, we introduced you to our Unofficial TOC – those quirky, unexpected data points we editors spot in every issue. June/July had us wondering about hair, hats, artspeak, and the ABCs.

Here’s your UTOC for the June/July issue:

• We all have one, so why does a skull seem so creepy? On the other hand, our Crafted Lives couple doesn’t see it that way, nor does Robert Ebendorf. (Check out his King of the Road piece - sixth in the image gallery).

• The Rustbelt’s industrial landscape has proven to be fertile ground for two artists: Cleveland’s Wendy Stevens, who makes exquisite purses from perforated metal, and Detroit’s Nicholas Stawinski, a furniture maker who got a push from his upholstering family.

• Use this brainy art word at your next cocktail party: interstitial. It’s the name of one of Meghan Patrice Riley’s award-winning necklaces and of Julia Barello’s next show (“Interstitial Spaces,” with Beverly Penn).

• Sure, the alphabet is a big draw among the preschool set; our Crafted Lives kid learned it by pounding metal type into reclaimed leather. But it also motivates Christian Faur, whose meticulously crafted crayon works often include color-coded secret messages.

• Finally, we’ve got three guys demonstrating the power of the porkpie (Voices, Shop Talk, Crafted Lives) and four testaments to shaggy hair (Joel Philip Myers, Scottish cow, 4-year-old Søren in Crafted Lives, and the quartet in One Piece).

What coincidences do you see? We’d love to see your observations.

And while you’re at it, how about joining the American Craft Council, so you can get the magazine at home (and go to our shows for free)? Our mission is to remind people how important the creative impulse is to their quality of life. We support artists, and we hope you’ll join us.
